Noiseware – A Noise Reduction Tool Without Equal
Posted: 29 Jun 2010 06:35 AM PDT Who doesn’t have noise? If you don’t run into noise in your digital images, at least once in a while, you may not be pushing the envelope enough. You can photograph long after dark; if you haven’t tried it, you owe it to yourself to experience this—it’s magical. And if you find you don’t have a DSLR on hand, this should be no reason not to make pictures with a point-and-shoot or cell phone. Whether you’re using a cell phone, a point-and-shoot digital camera or a DSLR at high ISOs or with very long exposures, you’re bound to run into some noise. Noise happens. When you have it, there’s a lot you can do about it. There are many ways you can reduce noise during postprocessing; you could even say there’s an art to it. Learning these techniques can improve good exposures and save others. If Lightroom and Photoshop fail to adequately reduce noise in your images, it’s time to move to third-party plug-ins. For years, they’ve done a superior job of reducing noise, and they still do. While there are many fine third-party plug-ins for Photoshop (Noise Ninja, Neat Image, Dfine, etc.), one stands out from all the rest: Imagenomic’s Noiseware Professional. For me, Noiseware is the most robust noise-reduction software available. Ironically, while it offers the most sophisticated feature set, very often the default settings when you first open an image are all you’re likely to need. In many cases, very little, if any, additional tweaking is necessary … Read more at Digital PhotoPro. Find Noiseware here. Learn more in my workshops. |

elements
So, today was the first day of Advertising Elements, and we had a sort of open portrait assignment to complete this evening, and I just wanted to share a couple favorites from the shoot. Tomorrow morning I have a still life in the studio, and then another assignment for tomorrow evening. It's going to be a crazy but productive summer. Hope you all are enjoying your break so far :)

Breakfast
I'm not sure what the protocol is on the class blog seeing as how we aren't the PA3 class anymore. But I don't see the harm in continuing. I'm under the impression that no one has posted anything since Spring quarter ended anyway because everyone is vegetating. In my head I picture it as everyone sort of melting and sizzling away in a chair because they don't have to move anymore. I sure hope it's not that though.
So, I thought I'd just drop in and leave you with part of the breakfast I made last weekend. My sister and her friend stayed at my place, so I had to cook extra.

a photograph-er
This is the work of bay area photographer Paccarik Orue. He's a student at my old school in San Francisco, Academy of Art University. I particularly enjoy his portrait series "where you remain fixed". I think his style is a lot of what I aspire to personally. Check him out! He has some really beautiful work.
Judeman
Hellooo.
Say hi to Jude.
He's my roommate. He moved into my apartment shortly after I did. For a while, we got along, but lately our lives have just been taking us different directions. He's the affectionate, needy type. I'm not really into cuddling, so we fight about that a lot. And he doesn't like it when I stay out late. I get this long lecture everytime I come home after dark. We aren't really happy with each other, so he's looking for a new place.
Would anyone like to take this guy in and love him up? I just don't really have the time and patience for a cuddly guy like him. I think he wants a friend(cat), but I don't have the space for another Jude. So, if you could help him (and me) out by taking him in, or letting your friends know he's looking for a home, please drop me a line or comment. We'd really appreciate it.
His hobbies are stealing straws out of your drink (this is like... a necessity), hanging out in the bathtub, chasing bugs, people watching, and catapulting off furniture.
Also, his favorite show is The Golden Girls and he likes to watch people play Paper Mario.

A Lovely Day in the Rochacha
Yesterday this festive group went out to Mt. Hope to do some shooting. It got me thinking about photography compared to other arts I enjoy. Comparatively, photography is the only art I enjoy working on in a group. Drawing, painting, sculpting, anything other than photography, I can't work with my peers analyzing and looking over my shoulder. After I create a piece, I am always looking for critique, but photo is the only time I relish company during the process. With photo, a group is an efficient machine. Everybody notices something different about lighting, props, models, and when you're in a group of talented people (like this one!), your work only profits from their input.
Thanks to everyone in our class this quarter, and quarters past, for being open to collaboration and helping me to grow as an artist.
with affection,
Chloe

Final Hine-esque
collabs- future social networking art
http://ic-collabs.deviantart.com/
people post simple color patterns / designs and then everyone in an image thread takes time to manipulate / draw and scan / illustrator / optimize it over the course of the thread (it could go from 20 minutes to an hourish)
i've attached an example of a starting picture
pretty interesting

Photoshop CS5 Trial
I decided to google Adobe CS5 to see when the release date was, and I was sent to cs5.org, the unofficial CS5 blog. First thing I saw was an add for a CS5 trial. Thinking it was too good to be true I clicked the link and it sent me to the adobe website where you can download any CS5 program as a trial. Here's the link for the Photoshop CS5 trial.

Notcot and the IMPOSSIBLE project
My brother sent me a link to notcot.org recently. This site has endless projects and works by brilliant people. I'd suggest getting lost over there for a while. Just don't forget to come back to make your own crafts, photos, sketches, paintings, and anything else you can imagine. I promise you there's something for everyone here.
Also, do a search for Asher Eggleston and you'll find where my brother was featured and his website.

In case anyone was concerned (I was), there's no need to fear for the life of instant polaroids anymore. As far as I can tell, the IMPOSSIBLE project is taking care of everything. They're selling cameras and film, accessories and books now, although it looks like they're completely sold out for now.

Birthday
I'll be 24 in 10 minutes.
It is depressing, after 18 I think they're all depressing.
Another year gone by and I feel like I accomplished a lot with this one, I also think I destroyed a lot in the past year too. 1 year ago I was positive I couldn't get into a college if I tried, I upset people close to me, I got really upset a lot, I punched a lot of holes into walls and took a trip to Strong Memorial at 2 in the morning. I've lost my job and got new ones. I'm broke in comparison to the past but I'm rich in comparison too. I've got a future but don't know where I'm going. I know exactly what I want to do and have no clue what I want to do. I've moved 4 times in 12 months and will move again in August. I've driven probably 30 or 40 thousand miles (no exaggeration). I've learned a lot and tried to forget even more.
5 minutes to go and I feel like I'm going to have a breakdown
ps. too late i'm 24

new stuff for final
I shot another of my models for my final project on environmental portraiture yesterday... not much optimizing done to these yet
Doing this shoot made me realize how much I've grown over the last year, and even in the last 8 weeks or so. I had to go check out a light kit from the cage Saturday morning, dash over to his house, set up and shoot in 45 minutes and then run off to work. I'd also never been to his apartment, so I had no idea what the ambient light would be like, what his "environment" would be like, how much space I'd have, etc. Sure, if I'd had more time, there are things I would've tweaked, but overall, I was able to balance the natural light nicely and use the strobes more as a fill like I wanted. I used to toil for hours trying to get my lighting to even look remotely like what I envisioned, but it all feels much more natural now.
I think the first is definitely my favorite, but these are a couple outtakes that I still like.

Eidetic Imagery - thoughts to ponder...
http://pages.slc.edu/~ebj/minds/student_pages/sally-jane/history.html
Some excerpts from this site:
Eidetic Imagery
Ralph Haber, "Historically, the only definition of eidetic imagery is phenomenological - a description by the subject of what he is seeing."
Gray and Gummerman, the typical definition is
While the first definition is a bit more exact than the second, both mean that a person who posesses eidetic imagery is able to "see" and describe an image in great detail after that image has been removed from their sight, and can perform this feat for a fairly extensive period of time. These definitions are the basis for the research being done on eidetic imagery today.
Therefore, visual imagery concerns seeing in one's mind an object as if it were right there, when in fact it is not.

the ability to retain an accurate, detailed visual image of a complex scene or pattern (sometimes popularly known as photographic memory) or the ability, posessed by a minority of people, to 'see' an image that is an exact copy of the original sensory experience.
